Force Distribution within the Human Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) : Biomechanical Measurement Using a Robotic System

A combined methodology using both a robotic system and a universal force-moment sensor (UFS) was used to determine the distribution of the in-situ force in the human anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) by means of sequential transection of the ACL under the principle of superposition. Under 100 N of anterior force applied to the knee, the ACL carried larger force than the medial collateral ligament. Within the ACL, the posterolateral (PL) portion carried larger force than the anteromedial (AM) portion at flexion angles less than 30°, while the converse was true at flexion angles larger than 30°. Within the AM portion, the posterior section of the AM portion (P-AM) always carried larger force than the anterior section of the AM portion (A-AM) under anterior force. These results are applicable to improvement of both the diagnosis of ACL rupture and the surgical technique of ligament reconstruction.
