The AgNORs number, AgNORs-area and AgNORs-morphologic pattern of 43 cases of gallbladder cancer, 15 of gallbladder adenoma and 10 of normal gallbladder epithelium were investigated with the aid of an image analyzer. The AgNORs-number and AgNORs-area parameters demonstrated statistically significant differences. In particular, AgNORs-area changed in proportion to histologic malignant grading, while AgNORs-number varied significantly between low and high malignancies. Morphologic patterns of AgNORs-dots could be divided into five groups according to its number, size, shape and location. Using our classification criteria, gallbladder cancers could thereby be clearly discriminated from normal tissue with adenomas, occupying an intermediate position. In conclusion, assessment of AgNORs-number, AgNORs-area and morphology might provide a useful aid in clarifying the biological natures of malignant and benign gallbladder tumors.
