Between April, 1986 and December, 1989, 247 patients with colorectal cancer underwent curative resection at our hospital. Postoperative colonoscopy was performed in 146 (42.1%) of them. We evaluated the importance of colonoscopy in these patients. Colonoscopy was performed a total of 228 times in the 146 patients. It was performed once or twice in 124 patients (85%). The interval between operation and the first postoperative colonoscopy was less than 1 year in 100 patients (68%). The mean interval in the 149 patients was 11.9 months. The first postoperative colonoscopy revealed local recurrence (recurrence at the anastomosis site) in 9 of the 146 patients, and the second colonoscopy was the first to demonstrate local recurrence in 2. Recurrence was observed 3〜22 months after operation (mean, 10.9 months). The recurrent tumor was resectable in 6 patients (55%). To detect recurrence early and monitor for heterochronous multiple cancer, the first postoperative colonoscopy should be performed 6 months after operation, and close follow-up is needed.
