When murine macrophages derived from the peritoneal cavities of CBA mice were infected in vitro with Mycobacterium leprae (Thai-53 strain) intracellular multiplication was observed 3 weeks after infection. Morphological studies showed that growth of M. leprae in the cultured macrophages was inhibited in the presence of rifampicin, protomin or clofazimine entrapped in liposomes. This method could be used to test the sensitivity of M. leprae to antimicrobial agents.
