The multiplication of facultative intracellular bacteria in in vitro cultured macrophages was assessed in the absence and presence of antimicrobial agents entrapped in liposomes, with following results. When murine macrophages derived from the peritoneal cavities of CBA and C57BL/6 mice were infected in vitro with Mycobacterium lepraemurium, CBA marked intracellular multiplication was observed for 2-3 weeks after infection. Microscopic examination revealed, however, that intracellular growth of the bacilli was inhibited with a rather small amount of isonicotinic acid hydrazide or rifampicin, when both of them were entrapped in liposomes and added into the culture medium. Growth of Salmonella enteritidis in cultured macrophages was inhibited in the presence of streptomycin entrapped in liposomes as determined by the bacterial colony counting method.
