A new mouse with hereditary neurological disorder characterized by various kinds of involuntary movement sustained during waking, has been discovered in inbred strain BALB/c mice. The mutant was named as "Wriggle Mouse Sagami" (WMS). It is due to congenital spontaneous mutation and the affected character is transmitted by the autosomal recessive gene "wri". The mutant shows no sign of disease at the time of birth, initial clinical signs begin to appear on the 10th day and then rapidly become distinct. Clinical features at the age of 4 weeks are fine tremor of forelimbs, up-and-down from side to side wriggling of neck, choreoathetosis and/or dystonic movement of trunk and limbs. As the result of these symptoms, affected mice can not maintain quadrupedal upright posture. They show under strain the muscle hypertonicity and the hypersensitive reaction of the whole body. Being put on the water, they struggle violently in confusion and can not swim. No involuntary movement is observed while sleeping. No deformation of joints is observed in aged affected mice. They survive longer than one and a half years under careful breeding. The syndrome seem due to the functional disturbance of the extrapyramidal system. However, crucial findings to clarify the cause of syndrome have not yet been obtained.
