Approximately three years have elapsed since the Tokai University Hospital opened its doors in February, 1975. Numerous cases have been encountered during that period, but cancer of the digestive system seems to be among the most frequently encountered disorders. The necessity of assessing the current status of cancer of the digestive system to assist in developing rational future management led the authors to review medical records of the patients during that period. Of the total of 381 patients, 224 were male and 157 were female. Epidemiological surveys revealed that the authors' hospital was playing an important role in primary care medicine in the central and western part of Kanagawa Prefecture. The incidence of esophageal and colonorectal cancers at the authors' hospital appeared to be significantly higher than the nationwide incidence. Epidemiological considerations indicated that this might be characteristic of the area where the patients at the authors' hospital were from, although a larger number of patients will be necessary to confirm this preliminary observation.
