Changes in human serum DBH activity after exercise and the cold pressor test were investigated to determine whether or not they reflect sympathoadrenal function. Changes in blood pressure and pulse rate were used as comparative marker of sympathetic activity. A significant increase in DBH activity associated with prominent elevation of blood pressure and increased pulse rate was observed after exercise. The time course of changes in DBH activity, however, was different from those for blood pressure and pulse rate. The fact that elevation of blood pressure, increase in pulse rate and unchanged level of serum DBH activity were observed after the cold pressor test suggests that changes in serum DBH activity is less sensitive as an index of sympathoadrenal activity than changes in blood pressure and rate.
