On mixing ethylene and ozone at a pressure of a few mm Hg for each gas, a flash or a flame was observed from room temperature down to -150℃. Inspite of no activation manner, the initial step of the reaction starts at very low temperature. This research has beep carried out for the purpose of getting some insight into the initial step of the explosive reaction between ethylene and ozone at low temperatures and low pressures. Manners of light radiation by the reaction, lag period, the effect of a preceding reaction product on the next run and natures of the condensed product were investigated. From these results, it is concluded that ethylene ozonide is not formed under our conditions, and that primary chains are formed on the wall of a reaction vessel to induce an explosive reaction of gaseous phase.
