The crystal structure of sulfur dioxide was found by the x-ray powder method to have an orthorhombic unit of structure of dimensions : a=6.03A, b=5.94A, c=6.08A at 95°K., containing four molecules. The probable space group was C^<17>_<2v>-Aba. By the method of trial and error, the atomic coordinates were determined as follows : 4s : (000), (01/21/2)+ 00z ; 1/21/2z with z_8=0 ; 80 : (000), (01/21/2)+ xyz ; xyz ; 1/2-x, 1/2+y, z ; 1/2+x, 1/2-y, z with x_0=0.151, y_0=0.141, z_0=0.117. The resulting structure has a marked feature, i.e., all the molecules orientate in one direction (c-axis). On this point, the relations between this structure and physical properties were discussed. The pairing of molecules in the sulfur dioxide crystal proposed by Giauque was not consistent with our structure.
