Polymorphism of cyclohexanol was studied by calorimetry and X-ray diffraction between 77 and 296°K. The natures of the metastable form-II as well as the low temperature stable form-III were clarified. From a thermoanalytical research it was shown that the process of irreversible transformation from the supercooled plastic crystal form-I into the form-II or the form-III took place through an intermediate phase (pre-II or pre-III). The transformation from the supercooled form-I into the form-III took place only if the sample had been cooled below a certain temperature at which the nuclei of the form-III were supposed to evolve. The anomalous specific heat of the supercooled form-I at 150°K was interpreted to be due to relaxation. Every phase revealed by thermal studies was ascertained by X-ray diffraction patterns.
