Crystalline Field Splitting of Fe^<2+> Ion in Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate

The crystalline field splitting of the Fe^<2+> ion in ferrous ammonium sulfate was studied by measuring the magnetic susceptibility of a single crystal at very low temperatures. The splittings obtained were discussed in connection with the line width of paramagnetic resonance absorption lines of added Mn^<2+> impurities in the ferrous salt. Very large splittings for the lowest levels were obtained and these values were compared with the magnetic specific heat data obtained by Hill and Smith.
