During his Oxford days, Oscar Wilde is known to have been attracted to Catholicism and even to have had some desire to join the Church of Rome, although it was not until the very moment of his deathbed that he was really converted. Most biographers invariably mention this fact more or less, yet the ways they deal with it vary so much that those who read their writings will be perplexed what to think about it. One thing we notice in their various ways of dealing with this fact is that there are some differences, even though slight ones at times, among their approaches to the problem with the lapse of the times. For instance, in 1930's or '40's, some biographers were more inclined to take this subject quite seriously than those in '20's or before, while some of Oscar's contemporaries were apt to be either indiferrent to or making light of it, justreferring to it as "his flirtation with Scarlet Woman." But after 1930's, it seems that new approaches have been brought about as Catholicism itself has been revived in the new form of an ideological thought of the Present Age. Indeed Oscar was not a Catholic in the real sense of the term till he was about to die, when he was finally baptised and given Extreme Unction by Father Dunne, who was sent for by R. Ross. However, it might be assumed that his desire to return to the Church of Rome had never failed him since his undergraduate days in Oxford. The present writer is most interested to know whether this assumption will come true or not by exploring this aspect of his life and also most of his literary works under the light of Catholicism as well.
