Many of Shakespeare's plays have been put on the stage in Japan since the Meiji era, and nowadays we could go and see any of them at any time and at any place almost all the year round. They might be called among the most popular theatrical works of all the Western literature in modern Japan. The introduction of William Shakespeare and his works to Japan seems to have started in the 18th century, that is, about the middle of the Tokugawa period, but at that time they were not so popular as they are now, and a few of the works were partly introduced or adapted for the Japanese people as well as the Japanese stage in those days. We have two kabuki plays which are more or less similar to Romeo and Juliet in plot and in characters : one is "imoseyama onna teikin" by Hanji Chikamatsu first performed in the late 18th century, and the other is " kokoro no nazo toketa iroito" by Nanboku Tsuruya IV & Jisuke Sakurada II in the early 19th century. Although there is no evidence left to show that the two playwrights read or saw Shakespeare' s plays in person so as to write their works taking after Romeo and Juliet, it still seems probable that there could have been a kind of cross-cultural connection between them even at that time. In the Meiji era some celebrated plays, such as Juliui Caesar, The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet were staged many times by the Japanese theatrical troupes, but strangely enough, Romeo and Juliet, which is now regarded as one of our favourites, was not performed so often as the above mentioned ones. This is perhaps because in Romeo and Juliet as a play there is something too pure, too intense and too rapid, or rather something too modern in a way, which the Japanese in those days had some difficulty in understanding. Today we can enjoy most of Shakespearean plays freely and without any prejudice, since many cultural barriers between the East and the West have been removed along with a remarkable development of mutual communication and transportation throughout the world.
