Biomechanical influences on the upper vertebrae during mastication, an examination using the finite element method

Biomechanical effects on the superior vertebrae (C1-T1) during masticatory simulation were qualified using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. In order to assess the influences of the occlusal alteration on C1-T1, two models, geometrical symmetry (model-A) and asymmetry (model-B) were made according to change the occlusal plane inclination. Stress converged at the facet of the odontoid process of the atlas in both models. Stress magnitudes at this part of the atlas were approximately one-thousandth of the occlusal force. The head and neck attachment, intermediation of muscles and fascia, would explain the detected stress. The plot of stresses at each column for model-Arevealed completely symmetrical pattern whereas asymmetrical patterns for model-B were observed. This asymmetry may relate to displacements and deformation in the columns, bringing forth pressure of intervertebral discs, blood vessels and nerve fibers in cases of patients having orofacial pain.
