The Topographic Observation of Coloured Quartz under the High Electrostatic Field

An anomalous contrast in the X-ray topograph of X-ray irradiated (coloured) quartz was observed when a high electrostatic field (5 kV/mm) was applied to it. The boundary between the coloured and non-coloured parts was particularly enhanced. The observations with different g-vectors sugest that the strain gradient is induced normally to the boundary. It could be bleached off completely by X-ray irradiation without electric field for 30 minutes, and also by keeping the specimen at 500℃ for 3 hours. The conceivable cause of this phenomenon is the reverse piezoelectric effect of an inhomogeneous electric field induced by a space charge.
