Studies on the α-β Transition of Quartz by Means of in situ X-Ray Topography

By using high intensity X-ray generator (50 key, 1200 mA) and TV imagingsystem, diffraction topographs of quartz in a range from roc>m temperature upto 800'C were surveyed. The phase transition at 7'.=573'C was studied with anemphasis on elucidating the intermediate region (IR) between allow) and /7(high)phases. The topographs show clearly the existence of IR witlnin a range of 1 - 2degrees. It is a stable thermodynamical phase. The boundary energy of ox and IRis appreciably larger than that of p and IR. Often, fringe-like contrasts appearedalong c axis in IR, particularly under a relatively fast cooling. Neither micro twinmodel of at. and ct. structures nor a mixture model of a and p are acceptable forIR. The structure is likely to have a six-fold symmetry as that of the fi phase.
