A Superstructure Model to Interpret the Diffuse Electron Scattering Observed in Ba_2YCu_3O_y

A new superstructure model is proposed, which explains the diffuse electron scattering observed in some specimens of high-T_c superconductor Ba_2YCu_3O_y (y is nearly 6.6). A unit cell of the superlattice is A_s=2a, B_s=b and C_s=c, where a, b and c are the lattice parameters of the original orthorhombic lattice of Ba_2YCu_3O_y (a<b). The superstructure is derived by removing oxygen atoms on every other (-O-Cu-O-Cu-O-) one-dimensional chain in the basal plane of the original orthorhombic structure. The resulting structure is a unit-cell-level mixture of the orthorhombic and tetragonal structures of Ba_2YCu_3O_y.
