Rotation of a Single-Phase Ultrasonic Quartz Motor by means of Contour Vibrations and Change of Rotational Directions via Frequency Changes

Rotational characteristics of an ultrasonic motor composed of a quartz rectangular parallelepiped cut perpendicular to the X, Y and Z axes were examined. Quartz crystals used in the previous studies rotated only when they were resonating electrically at fundamental resonant frequencies f<X1> corresponding to the X-axis thickness vibrations, and at satellite vibration frequencies f_S close to f<X1>. It was found that the crystals presented in this paper can rotate not only at f_x (=f<X1> and f_S), but also at frequencies f_L related to the lengths of the directions of the Y and Z axes, and that the rotational directions can be changing the vibration frequencies among f_X and f_L.
