Atmospheric Pressure Dependence of Rotation Speeds of a Motor Composed of Resonating Crystalline Quartz

Changes in rotation speeds of quartz rectangular parallelepipeds cut perpendicular to the X, Y and Z axes were determined as a function of atmospheric pressure from 1 to 760 Torr. The rotation speed increased with decreasing pressure down to a certain pressure which initiated a discharge, then gradually decreased, and finally became zero at lower pressures. This rotation increase is ascribable to a resonance current increase caused by a decrease in friction between air molecules and a vibrating quartz crystal. The stopping of the rotation seems to be ascribable to a decrease in the resonance current resulting from the discharge.
