A Magnetically Induced Anomalous Ring Flame and Quenching Characteristics of Butane Flames

A butane diffusion flame is quenched when encircled with magnetic gradient fields. This phenomenon originates from magnetic forces F_r which accelerate combustion products and O_2-decreased air in the direction of the flame, thereby resulting in a shortage of oxygen supply. Under a constant value of a gap width d between the magnet poles, the time τ_q needed for the quenching decreases with increasing current I in a magnet coil because F_r increases with increasing I. Under a constant value of I, τ_q decreases with decreasing d because F_r increases with decreasing d. It has been found that the flame-light intensity more than doubles, and that an anomalous ring flame appears under certain conditions of magnetic gradient, gap width, etc.
