Large-Scale Ultrasonic Joining Tool for Joining Plastic Sheets Using a Rectangular Plate Face Vibrating in In-Plane-Mode

This new tool is constructed using a rectangular plate having a large joining area. The plate vibrates in the in-plane-mode. Static pressure was applied using a metal stamp. The shape of the pressing face of the stamp can be arbitrary. Using the 19 kHz joining system, which has a 130mm × 180mm joining area, we joined two polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFIE; Teflon^<TM>) sheets that were 0.4-0.8 mm thick. The joining face of the plate could rub the PTFE face vigorously. We found that the maximum load of the joint was determined by the product of the vibration velocity of the tool face and static pressure. Therefore, the joint strength distribution can be made uniform by adjusting the pressing face width according to the vibration velocity distribution of the tool face.
