Elementary Step Growth on the Surface of Vapour Grown FeCr_2S_4 Single Crystals

Single crystals of FeCr_2S_4 were obtained by chemical vapour transport of CrCl_3 and FeS in a quasi-closed tube system. Using a Nomarski-type interference contrast microscope, elementary steps on the crystal surface are investigated. The step height of the spiral pattern is determined by the interference fringes of a Michelson-type interference microscope. Its average value is 17.6±0.3 Å which agrees with the dimension of the body diagonal of the unit cell. A lateral growth mechanism by elementary steps is deduced. The Burton-Cabrera-Frank theory is applied to estimate the critical radius, the angular velocity of the spiral and the advancing velocity of the steps far from the centre. These values are calculated as 500 Å, 0.338 rad./sec and 537 Å/sec respectively.
