The Activation Energy of Photoconduction in the Optical Absorption Edge of Crystalline Anthracene

It was found that the photoconduction of anthracene changes remarkably with temperature for the longer wavelength tail of the optical absorption edge. In the temperature range from -150℃ to +130℃, the photoconduction is given by an exponential from. As the wavelength changes the thermal activation energy of the photoconduction in this region increases by the same quantity as the decrease of the photon energy. The explanation of this kind of behavior is difficult to accept with the model of a single photon or double photons excitation and monomolecular or bimolecular recombination annihilations of charge carriers. A tentative model of the photo-excitation of a phonon in the crystal resulting in a carriergeneration is believed to be adequate. It also gives evidence that the energy gap of anthracene is about 3.0 eV.
