Step Growth by Elementary Steps and Multi-Steps on the Surface of Vapour Grown FeCr_2S_4

Single crystals of FeCr_2S_4 grown by chemical vapour transport of CrCl_3 and FeS in a quasiclosed tube system exhibit growth patterns of elementary steps and other types of steps which are 2-8 times as high as an elementary step. These steps were investigated under a Nomarski-type interference contrast microscope and classified according to the height from the density analysis of photographs using a micro-photometer. The step height was determined by the interference fringes of a Michelson-type interference microscope. The elementary step height is 17.3±0.1Å which agrees with the body diagonal of the unit cell of FeCr_2S_4, and the height of the other types of steps is 34.6-138.4Å at the highest. These steps are stable and coexist with each other all over the crystal surface without bunching during the growth.
