15. An Optimal Planning Method of Propulsion Plants for LNG Carriers : A Planning Example of a Diesel Plant Combined with Gas/Steam Turbines

An optimal planning method is proposed to design propulsion plants for LNG carriers. A diesel plant combined with gas/steam turbines is investigated as an example of energy saving propulsion plants. Since this plant is equipped with several kinds of propulsion or auxiliary machinery supplying energy by their parallel operation, there exist many alternatives for the equipment size and operational policy. The planning problem is proposed as a combinatorial optimization one in which the equipment size and operational policy are determined together with the insulation thickness of cargo tanks so as to minimize the annual total cost. It is solved numerically by the application of a branch and bound algorithm. Through a case study for a plant of actual scale, it is ascertained that the proposed optimal planning method is a useful tool for designing plants rationally from the viewpoint of long-term economy.
