Comparative karyological studies in ten Ajuga species in Japan, Lamiaceae (Labiatae)

Somatic chromosome numbers of ten Japanese Ajuga species were observed. Ajuga shikotanensis f. hirsuta had 2n=64 chromosomes (octaploid if the basic chromosome number of x=8 is accepted) and the other nine species (A. incisa, A. japonica, A. makinoi, A. yesoensis, A. tsukubana, A. decumbens, A. ciliata var. villosior, A. nipponensis and A. pygmaea) had 2n=32 chromosomes (tetraploid if the basic chromosome number of x=8 is accepted). The chromosome numbers of A. incisa, A. japonica, A. makinoi, A. yesoensis, A. tsukubana, A. ciliata var. villosior and A. shikotanensis f. hirsuta were reported here for the first time. The chromosome numbers of A. decumbens, A. nipponensis and A. pygmaea supported the previous counts. Their karyotypes had commonly mono-modal (gradual) decrease in length from the largest to the smallest chromosomes. The species showed similar chromosome sizes and chromosome complements in centromeric positions to each other excepting A. shikotanensis f. hirsuta had slightly large sized chromosomes.
