Inducible Accumulation of mRNA for NADH-Dependent Glutamate Synthase in Rice Roots in Response to Ammonium Ions

After growth for 26 d in water, rice seedlings were transferred to a medium containing I mM NH4Cl. The mRNA for NA_4DH-glutamate synthase was markedly in-creased in the roots within 3 h. Methionine sulfoximine completely inhibited this accunrulation, suggesting that NH^+_4is not a direct inducer of this process.
