Acceleration of Chloroplast Division in Somatic Cell Hybrids between Mesophyll and Cell Culture Protoplasts

Tobacco mesophyll protoplasts were fused with protoplasts from cultured cells by electric fusion. When the fusion products were cultured for 2 d, chloroplast division was observed in the heterokaryocytes under fluorescence microscopy after staining with DAPI, while such chloroplast division was not observed when mesophyll protoplasts alone were cultured in the same condition.
