Ammonia Content in Mitochondria Isolated from Detached Pea Shoots. Effect of Light and Inhibitors of Photorespiratory Nitrogen Cycle

Mitochondria isolated from detached pea shoots which had been grown in water for 1.5h in the dark contained about 1.64 nmol NH_4+ per mg of protein. Light treatment caused approximately 50% increase in the mitochondrial NH_4+. Methionine sulfoximine slightly reduced the mitochondrial NH_4+, although total NH_4+ in the shoot extracts was greatly increased by the inhibitor.
