The subcellular location of nitrous oxide reductase was investigated in the denitrifying photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides forma sp. denitnficans grown under photodenitrifying conditions. The activity assayed with benzyl viologen as an artificial electron donor was found exclusively in the periplasm fraction. The results suggested that nitrous oxide reductase, as well as nitrate and nitrite reductases in this photodenitrifier, is a periplasmic enzyme.
