A Monocyclic Carotenoid Glucoside Ester is a Major Carotenoid in the Green Filamentous Bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus : NATURAL PRODUCTS

A novel monocyclic carotenoid glucoside ester, carotenoid B-G-FA (OH-y-carotene glucoside ester), was found in Chloroflexus aurantiacus strain J-10-fl as a major carotenoid component, and its precise chemical structure was determined to be 1'-[(6-0-acyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl)oxy]-1',2'-dihydro-β,ψ-carotene. The major fatty acids were hexadecanoate and hexadecenoate, while those of the cellular lipids were hexadecanoate, octadecanoate and octadecenoate. Other carotenoids in this strain were β-carotene, γ-carotene, carotenoid B (OH-γ-carotene) and carotenoid B-G. These carotenoids, including carotenoid B-G-FA, were also found in another strain, OK-70-fl, and in a new strain, MD-66, which seems to belong to another species of Chloroflexus. Thus, the carotenoid glucoside ester is likely to be a common major carotenoid component in the green filamentous bacteria.
