Specific Inhibition of Electron Transfer for Nitrate Reduction by a Low Concentration of Cyanide in Rhodobacter sphaeroides f. s. denitrificans

The effects of cyanide on the electron flow in NO^-_3 and NO^-_2 reductions and photosynthetic electron transfer were investigated with intact cells of a photodenitrifier, Rhodobacter sphaeroides f. s. denitrificans. In the presence of 30 μ_M KCN, electron transfer for NO^-_3 reduction was inhibited by about 70% and the concomitant H^+ translocation was completely inhibited. However, neither NO^-_2 reduction nor photosynthetic cyclic electron transfer was affected at 30 μM. These results suggested that the electron transfer pathway to NO^-_3 has, in addition to a b-type cytochrome and the nitrate reductase, a component sensitive to a low concenration of cyanide which is not involved in the cytochrome bc_1 complex.
