A kinetic study of the auxin-induced elongation of Avena coleoptile segments

The auxin-induced elongation rate (v) is represented by the auxin concentration (s) as follows, 1 /v = <A_0>/s + B_0 where A_0 and B_0 are constants. Substances inhibiting auxin-induced elongation, such as actinomycin-D, cycloheximide or puromycin, cause changes in the coefficients of the equation, permitting classification of' these substances into at least three groups in terms of their modes of action. The significance of nucleic acid and protein synthesis in auxin-induced elongation is discussed.
