A strip of filter paper saturated with a pH 3.0 buffer solution and placed on the upper side of a light-grown cucumber hypocotyl seedling can eliminate the negative geotropic curvature of horizontally placed seedlings, by promoting elongation of the upper side. These filter paper strips also caused strong curvature of vertically placed seedlings and induced cell wall loosening of the epidermis.
