^<13>C NMR Studies of the Reaction between N-Ethyl-piperidones and Methanol

^<13>C Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of a series of N-ethyl-piperidones were determined in CDCl_3 and in CH_3OH. The spectra of N-ethyl-3-piperidone and N-ethyl-4-piperidone in CH_3OH were complicated compared with those in CDCl_3. By examining the ^<13>C chemical shifts, this phenomenon was associated with the equilibrium hemiacetal formation. ^<13>C NMR technique was shown to be a powerful tool for studying such equilibrium systems. Factors controlling the equilibrium are discussed.
