dl-Ribose and dl-arabinose were synthesized, starting from dl-1,1-diethoxy-5-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)-3-pentyn-2-ol which was prepared by the Grignard reaction of glyoxal hemiacetal with 3-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)-1-propionylmagnesium bromide.
