Considerations have been carried out of the reliability of a welded joint after non-destructive inspection taking into account limitations in the detectability of defect which NDT applied has inevitably. By using the actual data on detectability of ultrasonic examination applied to a steel-framed structure and its defect occurrence characteristic, effect of various factors on reliability of a welded joint has been discussed quantitatively. According to the results, an approach to determination of reasonable critical acceptance level of weld defect was presented and a new inspection system (step inspecion) with the inspection cost reduction in mind was also proposed.
