Mechanical and/or metallurgical heterogeneity caused inevitably in welded joint affects the fracture behaviors and the evaluation of fracture toughness of weldments. Considerations of fracture controlling parameter for welds with heterogeneity have been conducted by some fracture tests for typically idealized models. Absorbed energy obtained by V-notch Charpy test of materials with considerable heterogeneity of strength has generally no physical meaning as a fracture toughness parameter. Fracture initiation occurs firstly in the embrittlement region which exists in the vicinity of crack tip, that is, "quasi-pop-in" behavior can be observed. Fracture toughness at the quasi-pop-in level is dominated by that of the embrittlement region. Fracture which initiates due to the local embrittlement can often be arrested afetr a short crack propagation. In that case, fracture toughness in globally unstable fracture becomes considerably higher than that in the quasi-pop-in. The short-crack-arrest-toughness should be an important parameter for avoiding the globally unstable fracture.
