In this research, the authors made various kinds of preheating before welding of the butt-joint specimen and carried out multiple pass welding under two kind of the restraint conditions, and investigated the relation between preheating temperature and crack sensitivity in multiple pass welds, together with the relation between the preheating temperature, of pass number and the restraint force. The test results are summarized as follows: 1) The final restraint force became greater as the preheating ternperature, went up higher, and it showed gradual increase as the number of passes increased. 2) The final restraint stress reached its peak at 1 or 2 pass welds. 3) The prevention of cracking in the multiple pass welds could be attained by increasing the number of passes to decrease the final restraint stress. 4) The occurrence of cracking in the high-strength steel could be prevented under the suitable preheating temperature.
