The authors conducted weld cracking tests on high strength steels of 75 kg/mm^2 and 60 kg/mm^2 in strength to select the optimum preheating temperature for prevention of cracking, using the RRC and the TRC testing methods. They investigated the effects of the restraint stress and the preheating temerature on the weld cracking for these steels. In this investigation the following facts are clarified: 1) There exists a critical restraint stress, in the range below which no cracking occurs at certain preheating temperature, no matter how the period of loading is prolonged in both tests. 2) The minimum preheating temperature required for prevention of cracking depends largely on the restraint condition. 3) It is one of the essential factors for prevention of cracking in welding of these steels to adopt the preheating temperature suitable for the restraint condition of the joint to be welded.
