Japanese shipbuilding industry introduced its welding technique from the United States after the Second World War, and has been considerably successful results in its application to shipbuilding process with further technological improvements and innovations of its own. This treatise is intended to explain the existing position of the welding in shipbuilding. And so as to describe this type of everprogressing techniques as much fully and incorrectly as possible, the developmental process of welding technique was roughly divided into three periods, and the outline and the tendency in each period is fully explained. Especially, regarding the transitional process of technological contents from the past to the present, not only the characteristics of the technique, but also statistical data about the actually used results of welding materials are shown in details, and regarding the future developmental trends, dealt with the feature of welding procedure in shipbuilding. Further, on the basis of these studies, the existing conditions of the new and various technological researches and their future progressing trends are expressed.
