Ice breaking vessels have to navigate smoothly, breaking ice floe. Thus, the bow construction and the other structures in the ice belt require heavy plating of good notch toughness. To answer such a requirement, the authors developed new steels of excellent notch toughness and excellent mechanical properties through the recent advanced steel making process, called "CLC process". The new steels are 50 kgf/mm^2 class high tensile strength steels of 40 mm thickness and 75 mm thickness. Then, these steels were tested in aspect of the workability, weldability and joint performance, and their applicability to the hull structure of ice breaking vessels was studied. Consequently, it has been made clear that these steels can be welded by the conventional welding procedure and have a satisfactory performance which can assure the safety required for ice breaking vessels.
