All members of the genus Monotarsobius that are known in Japan can be separated by means of the following key: 1. No ocellin present.....M. caecigenus Miyosi Ocelli present.....2 2. Length 6-6.5mm. Colour dark brown, in life mature individuals head and leg yellowish. Ratio of cephalic plate length to width is 1: 1, antennae composed of 17 articles in both sexes, about 2mm, length of each article is as long as width. Each eye consisting of 4 ocelli arranged in a series (Fig. C). Prosternal teeth 2+2, with a short outside prodont on each, the median sinus V-shaped (Fig. B). Posterior angles of none of tergites present, posterlor margins of 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th and 12th slightly incurved. Tarsi of legs 1st to 13th entirely single, pretarsi with two accessory claws (Figs. F, G). Penult and anal legs larger than anterior legs, and pretarsi with an accessory claw (Figs. D, H). The male with secondary sexual modifications: tibia of anal legs bearing a characteristic crest at the distal end, and the cres bearing arranged hairs (Fig. E); tibia of penult and anal legs with shallow furrows; tarsi of anal legs conspicuously short (Fig. D). Plectrotaxy of holotype rather simple as shown in Table 1. Coxal pores small, circular 1, 2, 2, 2 in male, 2, 3, 3, 3 in female. Claw of female gonopods acutely spoon-shaped, basal spines 2+2 (Figs. I, J, K). Holotype: 1♂; Allotype: 1♀; Paratypes: 12 specimens. All the types collected by the author. Type locality: Izumigawa, Niihama, Ehime Pref. On Dec. 29, 1963. Other record: Sakurasanri, Komatu-cho, Ehime Pref. On Jan. 4, 1964. Types are preserved in the author's collection. Remarks: The present new species resembles M. nihamensis and M. eleganus, but is distinguished by the characteristics of the modefications of penult and anal legs in the male. Monotarsobius sasanus sp. nov. Length 6-9mm, colour brown or somewhat darker, last four joints of anal and penult legs yellowish. Antennae about 1.6mm, composed of 19+19 or 19+18 articles. Ratio of cephalic plate width to length is 40: 37, ocelli 6 in two series (Fig. M). Prosternal teeth 2+2, in a line on the outside as shown in Figure R. Posterior angles of none of tergistes present, posterior margins of large tergites except the 1st, slightly incurved. Tarsi of legs 1st to 13th undivided (Fig. O), pretarsi of legs 1st to 14th with an accessory claw (Fig. P), anal legs without it (Fig. S). Plectrotaxy of the male holotype is shown in Table 2. Tibia of anal legs of male with secondary sexual modifications as shown in Figures L and N. Coxal pores small, circular, 2, 2, 2, 2. The female is unknown. Holotype: 1♂; Paratypes: 8 male specimens.
