The genus Ampelodesmus is one of the subtropical Diplopods genera, belonging to the subfamily Pyrgodesminae in the family Cryptodesmidae, and three species in the genus are found in Japan. According to previous records, they were collected from a part of the country. Their range, however, seems to be a large area of western Japan. A. iyonis is found in the Niihama area where its breeding habits are observed. In natural habitats, both larvae and adults are usually found in the tunnels of ant nests under rocks, decayde wood and piles of tile. According to the author's observations made both in the laboratory and in natural habitats, a copulation period normally begins at the early part of April and continues to the beginning of June. The acutural copulation of this species is similar to that of the group Proterandria described by several authors. The copulatory position is shown Figure A. A pair chings to each other by the legs, and the male's gonopods are in contact with the female's vulvae. The copulation may repeat several times and may last for various periods. Observations on egg-laying behavior were made on millipedes bred together with a colony of ants, Tetramorium caespitum LINNE, in glass jars which contained moist loam and rotten leaves. In 1963, under 16-20℃ temperature conditions, the first egg-nest of the millipedes was observed at the end of April. The egg-laying period lasted to the end of June. Some egg-nests of these millipedes were found under rotten leaves, small tiles and pieces of wood, etc. Most of the egg-nests, however, were situated on the glass walls of tunnels which ants made in glass jars. This species makes a nest to protect the eggs. Successive stages in building the nest are shown in Figurs B-I. In the first, the base of the wall was constructed (Figs. B-D), and then the first egg was deposited (Fig. E). The other eggs were laid at intervals of about three minutes (Fig. F-H). The shape of the nest is a small dome (Fig. I), 1.7mm in diameter and about 0.9mm high. It takes 1.5-20 hours to complete the nest. The eggs are creamy white, spherical and the diameter is about 0.3mm. The numbers of eggs in 59 nests were observed. They were variable as shown in Table 1, and there were, in general, 4-6 eggs per nest. This number of eggs may be fewer than that of other groups in Polydesmoidea.
