The leading-following relationship of immature yellowtails, Seriola quinqueradiata Temminck et Schlegel was studied by means of a motion picture recording. The fish, all very close in size, were individually tagged and divided into groups of 2 and 4 fish in an outdoor experimental tank (4×4m). In the 4-fish group, the smallest individual was often followed by the larger ones. This relative "leader" was more clearly observed when the number of fish was reduced to 2, although an almost equal number of leading acts were made by each. The leading rate of the former "leader" was somewhat less than the mean leading rate of the same fish recorded in the 4-fish group. In the 4-fish group, the number of fish joining the school increased together with the number of leading acts, after feeding. Isolated fish (the "leader") made leading acts more frequently than those observed in the 2 and 4-fish groups.
