In a school of young golden trevallies, Caranx speciosus (Forsskal) the leading-following relationship among individually distinguishable members (groups of 2- and 4-fish in captivity) was studied by means of a motion picture recording. In the 4-fish group, the largest individual was often followed by the smaller ones. This relative "leader" was more clearly observed in the 2-fish group, although the "leader" made less leading acts than the "follower" and the leading rate of the "leader" was slightly less than the mean leading rate of the same fish recorded in the 4-fish group. In both the 2- and 4-fish groups, the appearance of food stimulated parallel orientation by mutual attraction. When the number of fish in the school increased from 2 to 4, the number of leading acts and the swimming velocity of the leading fish increased. The isolated fish behaved nearly the same as when present in groups of 2- and 4-fish.
