In the experimental populations of the three races of the Japanese crucian carp (Kin-, Gin- and Gengoro-buna) started with the larvae just hatched from one batch of eggs and fed with different kinds of food, the growth of the component fry was studied during four or five months in relation to feeding and schooling behaviour. 1. The order of increase in body size of Kin- to Gin- to Gengoro-buna was seen in the first two months. In this period the decrease in growth rate of Kin-buna exceeded that of other two races. The same order in body height was caused through a remarkable decrease in the ratio of height to length of the body at the developmental etap G in Kin-buna, which was not observed in the other two races. 2. All three races fed with Cladocera, trout pellets and slimeworms showed more or less good growth, but the growth rate of those fed with Cholrella was far less than when fed with other kinds of food. 3. Respiration rate of Kin- and Gin-buna was larger than that of Gengoro-buna, but Kin-buna showed far greater tolerance to low oxygen concentration than the others. 4. Schooling tendency of Kin- and Gin-buna became more indistinct as they became older, but the school of Gengoro-buna was observed still in the later course of growth. 5. In the mixed population of the three races, Gin-buna showed the largest growth rate of the three when food supply was limited.
