The role of sight and smell in the social hierarchy of the yearling rainbow trout was studied in a group of four even-sized individuals with a known social-ranking order by the successive removal of lenes and eyeballs, and nares-cautery. Although the deprivation of sight (including form vision alone) and subsequent smell induced marked falling off of aggression level, one particular dominant fish remained the foremost aggressor and maintained its position during the 12-week experiment. Deprivation of sight and subsequently of smell did not cause an increase in retaliation by the subordinates against the dominant. It is suggested that sight and smell did not play an essential role in the release of aggression in the established group, but rather that the prior experience of a domination-submission relationship in a despotic type of social hierarchy such as in the rainbow trout deeply affected the hierarchy maintence. A clear correlation was found between the social-ranking and the weight-ranking orders by the end of the experiment.
