SUZUKI, I., YAMAMOTO, A. and KOMIYA, H., The Effects of Differing Amounts of Exercise Training on physical Fitness and Serum Lipids in Middle-aged Men and Women. Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.9, No.2 pp61-67, 2003. To study the effects of two differing low amounts of aerobic training on the physical fitness and serum lipid profiles of middle-aged men and women following 6 months of exercise training. The mixed-gender subjects were assigned randomly to one of three groups: (1) a non-exercise control group, hereafter referred to as CG; (2) a group which underwent training of one 90-min session/wk, hereafter referred to as TA 1; and (3) a group which underwent training of two 90-min sessions/sk, hereafter referred to as TA w. The subjects worked up to exercise at 65% to 75% of their age-predicted maximum heart rate (HR) during the supervised sessions. Physical fitness was measured usion physical work capacity at 150 bpm of heart rate (PWC150), and exercising systolic blood pressure at 150 bpm of HR. Lipid and lipoprotein profiles were assessed before and after the training period in all groups. After training, subjects in both TA 1 and TA 2 probrams were fitter, and showed improved serum lipid profiles than they had had prior to training. After training, body mass in TA 2 groups for both genders was significant decreased. Relative changes of cardiovascular function parameters and serum lipid profiles in the TA 2 for both sexes were very clearly significant across the board as compared with those of the CG. Relative changes in cardiovascular function parametres for women in TA 1 were statistically significant as compared with those of the CG, but changes slightly less than significant occurred for men. Relative changes in serum lipids for women in TA 1 were significant as compared with those of the CG, but there were no significant changes for men in TA 1. Our data indicate that an exercise routine of 180-min/wk ckearly results in significant benefieial changes in physical fitness and lipid and lipoprotein profiles in both healthy middke-aged genders. However, an exercise routine of only 90-min/wk of exercise training, appears at best, to result in only minor benefical changes in physical fitness and lipid profiles for women, with no gbenefit at all for men.
